Mixed Bag

Genna Carroll

I sighAs the warm water pours down my backWashing off the dust and dirtOf the last weekIt’s been so long since I showered.

A moviePlaying on televisionSurrounding me with its music and imagesIt’s nice to be part of society again.

PillowsSoft and fluffyTwo of them on my bedI’d forgotten what they felt like.

A warm quiltPulled over meWhat a nice warm place to sleep.

A radiatorBlowing warmth into the roomIt’s nice to be away from the drafts of the tent.

Showers, television,Pillows, mattresses,Quilts, radiatorsSleeping will be easy here.

Before I drift offInto the welcoming world of sleepI look up.

I see only the white paintOf the ceiling above me,Separating me from the starsHigh up in the heavensPinpricks of light slowly rotatingWhich were my companions for the last week.
