On the Road, Dreaming of a Garden

Nova Macknik-Conde

Driving in a rented carWe stop for a secondI observe the diamondTessellation on a fence

I look at the one-way signThen turn my headI see bricks

And yellow paintAnd beautifulPink, purple and whiteFlowers

I see greenAnd four treesAnd yellow flowers

I close my eyesAnd think aboutThe moveAnd howOur new houseMight have aRoof garden

I will plantRoses and shrubs,Broccoli, celery,Tulips and proteas

Orchids and hibiscusesSpinach, mint, dandelions

Rosemary, garlic andOnions and thyme

There will beTomatoes andPotatoes andLilies and buttercupsI blink my eyes andI’m no longer in my gardenI’m in a tunnelI watch the whiteAnd blue and yellowGo flashing by

I think of blue proteas,Yellow buttercups,White roses,Chicory

Then I’m backIn my gardenI sit downAmong the plants andRead my favorite book
