I kneel down to the riverAnd say my prayersAs I hear the waterflowing and rollingI think about how freedom has overgrownThe magnificent mud of the MississippiI hear birds skim the treetopsAnd remember how, when I was a little girl,My mom walked me there, andI saw the brown waterI feel memories drift on the surface andSee my shadow through the deep.
