The Mystery of Cats

Marley Powell

Cleaning yourselfas if the world is just fineOf course you don’t know about September 11or the warYou don’t know about the terroristsor do you

Is that mangy dog down the street the terrorist you fear

What does someone of your small staturethink of the worldDo you look at the humans around youand think you’re much smarter because you can huntsmell a rat and see in the darkMaybe you think all we can do is open a can

How would you manage all these wars between countriesWould you talk out your problemsor use a more violent approach

Grady enters the roomand I watch the hair on your back riseYou don’t moveHe doesn’t moveThis could be a showdownBut no

The moment passes and you resume your cleaning

I breathe a sigh of relief

What would the world be like if ruled by a catsay, like you, StripesWould everyone be ordered to bathe for hours on end

You look up at mewith clear eyesand I’m curious to knowDo you actually reason or do you just look smart

You know I’ve always suspectedyou have the ability to think and alsothe ability to pretend to think

I see a smile flitting across your faceYou get up and go outsideEven though that dog could still be thereyou show no fear
