A note from Caleb
I wanted to start out by briefly recognizing the work you continue to do in the Writing Workshop. As a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, I have taken numerous writing workshops, and few come close to the level of genius you routinely display in just thirty minutes. It seems every week your work gets more original, nuanced, and engrossing.

2020
Eden George, 10
2020 was supposed to be our year
It was the year guaranteed to make us all cheer
What’s this we hear?
Coronavirus- nothing to fear
Kobe’s death, what could be worse?
Throughout the world armies did disperse
Confirmed alien sightings, we’re not alone in this universe
Words of warning from my mother the nurse
Rumors of schools ...
1993, Washington DC—
a new voice was being added to the Supreme Court.
It was the voice of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
It was a young voice, but it was strong.
And though she was young, she sang as loud as she could in the choir of the Supreme Court.
She was different from anyone there, but she still sang loud and bright and beautifully in the court.
We the People
have been creating cacophony
dissonant chords and jagged notes,
scattered rests and twisted octaves
the chaotic melody vanquishing a
weak, sibilant harmony
as tritone chords overwhelm
the concert
while the awkward bass clef
fails to signal the start of the ensemble
in an imperfect union.

Attack of the Invading Virus
Natalie Yue, 8
A prickly ball of red spines
Smirking, pesky, buggy, careless,
You know what I’m talking about:
None other than Coronavirus.
Affecting many lives each day,
Covid-19 is in our way
“It doesn’t matter” some people say
But this virus isn’t okay.

Talk
Dylan Li, 5
I like to
talk, talk, talk...
I talk to an apple
No answer
I talk to mommy and daddy
Sometimes mommy is working
daddy is sleeping
Sometimes daddy is working
mommy is sleeping
So I talk to Alexa
She always answers
But sometimes power is off
I really want to talk to my friends
face to face

I Express Myself
Fatehbir, 9
I will sit quietly and write in my journal.
When I am happy, I laugh or smile.
If I am sad, I may shed tears.
If I am angry, I may stomp my feet or sit quietly in my room or shout.
If I am excited, I may say, “I wish this day was over” to get to what I wanted.
If I am really happy, I may start to cry because of my happiness or my laughter.

COVID: The Normality Thief
Jane Lee, 12
Before Covid, my mom used to yell
“Hurry or you’ll miss the bell!”
My dad would add, “You're going to be late!”
But then the pandemic changed our fate
I miss
The rumble of the bus
Even though I had to rush
I miss having a freshly sharpened pencil
As a writing utensil
Replaced by the clacking sound
of a keyb...
