SAGARD Two police officers XIII: Speaking to Casey on the Telephone StoneSoupMagazine · Elana: Chapter 13 by Hannah Nami Gajcowski, 9 Elana knew that there was a high chance of somebody finding her. If only I could hide my bright red hair, she thought. Then she came up with a great idea. She sat on the ground, made a bunch of lightning rope appear, and began to weave. Elana didn’t know how to sew, but she was an excellent weaver. Soon enough, she was finished with her new work: a wig! Elana put the wig on her hair and tugged on it. Some strands of her hair peeked out, but she figured it just looked like red highlights against the wig. Elana didn’t worry about her face; she didn’t think anyone would recognize her. Elana hurried along the hall and suddenly came to a stop when she saw a maid who was about her age. The girl had long, curly black hair and a patchwork dress. She wasn’t looking ahead and ended up bumping into Elana. “Oh!” the girl exclaimed in a startled voice. “Didn’t see you there. Well, I thought you didn’t notice me either. After all, when you get blinded by the lightning that Casey makes, you are instantly under her command. If the lightning doesn’t strike you, she’ll come after you and try to put you under her mind control.” Elana froze as the talkative girl carelessly babbled on. “Now she’s trying to get this girl named Elana in the dungeons, but she must’ve escaped. I mean, she’s not in there anymore. Have you, perhaps, seen her? She has red hair, blue eyes, and a high-pitched voice.” Elana froze in terror. She hoped her disguise worked. Then, using her deepest voice, she lied. “I saw her in the kitchen. She was trying to help the house staff polish the silverware.” The maid grabbed a hidden phone from her pocket and then said, “Casey, someone knows where Elana is.” She paused, waiting for an answer. After a few seconds, the maid said, “Okay, okay, I’ll ask her.” Then, speaking to Elana, she inquired, “What’s your name?” “El—” Elana paused. What name would she say? Elana knew she had to think of one fast. Without thinking any further she blurted out, “Elmaña!” “Do you mean El Maña?” the maid asked, pausing between “El” and “Maña” for emphasis. “That sounds kind of like ‘the hand’ in the human language Spanish,” she remarked. “No,” Elana answered, lowering her voice again. “Elmaña,” she bellowed a bit more confidently. “Her name’s Elmaña,” the maid said into the phone. She paused again, then said, “I’ll hand her the phone.” Then she gave the phone to Elana. “Hello?!” Elana called, using her deep voice. She paused expectantly. “Can you give me some details?” Casey asked on the other end. “Yes,” Elana answered quickly, then explained. “I was there to clean the kitchen, and then I heard someone. She was dressed up in rags, and I asked her what her name was. She said ‘Elana.’ I asked her what she was doing in the kitchen, and she told me she was trying to surprise you by polishing the silverware.” “Why didn’t you put her in the dungeon?” Casey demanded. “I didn’t know that she was supposed to be there,” Elana responded, as innocently as she could. “Okay, then. Bye,” Casey answered in a why-didn’t-you-do-that tone of voice, then hung up. “What did she say?” The maid asked. “Just asked some questions, and then she hung up.” Elana answered. “That means she’s mad at you!” the maid explained in a terrified voice. “Do you like her?” Elana questioned. “Like her?!” the maid screeched. “Of course not! But that’s not the point. If she doesn’t like you, she’ll send your most horrifying dream at you!” Elana quickly changed the subject by asking the maid’s name. “Oh, sorry I didn’t tell you that before. I’m Hau’oli (HOW-oh-lee); it means ‘joyful’ in Hawaiian. Are you . . . Elana? I remember all the names of Casey’s house staff, and Elmaña is not one of them.” “Yes, my name is Elana,” Elana replied truthfully. “Sorry I didn’t tell you; I thought you got blinded by the light and were under Casey’s orders.” “Um, no,” Hau’oli replied. “I’m kinda like you—all my folks are under Casey’s orders. How are your friends and family?” “I don’t know about my family, but my friends are in the dungeon,” Elana replied. “Do you know why? . . . Wait! I also have another question! How did you get to talk to Casey? Because you weren’t under her command? Wait! Is it okay if you answer this one too—why were you babbling about random stuff when you met me? I could’ve been someone else—like Casey!” “First I’ll answer question one, and

REMY and MR. SAGARD Two police officers Prologue The main creatures that live on Neptune are furows, intelligent beings that look exactly like humans. They also act a lot like humans and like having human names. However, they aren’t exactly the same. They can survive both on solid planets like Earth and gas planets like Neptune. Furows share the beautiful planet of Neptune with other creatures, such as living gingerbread and various animals. These animals resemble Earthen animals such as cats, dogs, and crocodiles. We use Earthen animal names in this book to help our Earthen readers follow the plot. Elana, the heroine of this tale, is an ordinary furow girl who uses her determination, daring, and faith in magic to save the planet. I: The Chosen One Once upon a time, on the planet of Neptune, in the bustling city of Thener and country of Thou, there was a tall, redheaded, 10-year-old girl named Elana Garfield. One afternoon in science class at Jonesberg Elementary, Ms. Smit, the teacher, announced that they were going to change from their current subject, animals, and start discussing electricity. “To start with, class, I have a question for all of you,” Ms. Smit declared. “What are the two different types of electrical circuits?” Elana raised her hand at almost the exact moment Ms. Smit finished her question. “Yes, Elana,” Ms. Smit said with a smile. “Series circuit and parallel circuit,” Elana answered immediately in the most confident voice she could muster up. “Very good,” Ms. Smit congratulated her. “Do you want to tell us more?” Elana, though very shy, never wanted to lose a chance for attention, especially because she had six other siblings. “In a series circuit, if you break it, then all the light bulbs will turn off,” Elana said. “In parallel circuits, if you break a light bulb, the rest of the light bulbs will stay on.” Ms. Smit looked impressed. But she did not want to give Elana too much attention or then her other students might think she liked Elana best. “Very good,” Ms. Smit said again, and then began teaching the class how to make a parallel circuit. Elana was bored. She liked being the center of attention but rarely was because she had six brothers and sisters. “Elana, are you listening?” Ms. Smit asked sharply. “Uh, yes,” lied Elana. Ms. Smit gave her a skeptical look, then continued her lesson. Elana began to fidget with her paper on her desk; she did that when she was bored. Just then, the bell rang. Elana’s class ran out the door to a different class. But Elana herself couldn’t budge. Something deep inside her felt different. She felt that she was about to change at any moment. “Elana,” said a familiar voice behind her. Elana thought everyone had left and turned around, surprised. Behind her was Ms. Smit. “What!?” screeched Elana, feeling startled. “Calm down,” soothed Ms. Smit. “I just want to know which emojis spark your interest.” Ms. Smit then handed Elana an iPad. Elana was quite surprised by the odd question, but she typed in her favorite emojis in response: 💡🕯️🎤📡☀️😈🧚‍♀️👿🎇🎆⚡💀🌝🎭 Ms. Smit’s jaw dropped as if she had made the most fantastic discovery of her entire life. Then she disappeared in a puff of green smoke! The smoke began to turn into pictures of the emojis that Elana had chosen. One of the emojis slowly formed into a small, beautiful fairy with pale skin, green hair, green pants, and a purple shirt. She was about the size of Elana’s hand. Elana gasped in excitement. She had never seen a fairy before! Best of all, she looked just like the fairy emoji that sparked her interest on the iPad! Elana wanted to scream in excitement, but she thought better of it. Maybe Ms. Smit wanted her to keep the secret that she was a fairy. Well, if the fairy was Ms. Smit. Maybe she was a totally different person or creature. “You are the Chosen One,” announced the fairy grandly. “And you will go on an adventure to help me, Astrea, Daniel, Hera, Allen, and Sophia.” II: The Story “What are you talking about?” Elana asked loudly. “Shhh . . .” the fairy hushed. “I guess I’ll have to tell you the Story.” “What is the Story?” Elana inquired. “The Story is long, and at the end of your mission, you can learn my name. Now, I’ll tell you the Story,” the fairy (or possibly Ms. Smit) cleared her throat calmly, then began: “Long ago, Neptune was very dark because we are so far away from the sun. Back then, there was only one light on the entire planet of Neptune, and that came from one bright, dazzling light bulb. A couple of years later, another light was created. It was a single, brilliant candle. These

REMY and MR. SAGARD Two police officers VI (continued): The Background Theater At the end of the hallway was a theater, but without any seats for an audience. Instead, on stage, everybody was creating beautiful sets. There was everything from fancy houses to beautiful landmarks and unforgettable natural scenes. Elana stood amazed. She had never seen such beautiful backdrops! She looked at Henry, smiling, then noticed that Henry looked completely dazed and unresponsive, which puzzled Elana. What was wrong? Suddenly, all the gingerbread artists scurried over to Henry. “Henry’s sick!” one of them cried out in despair. During the commotion, Elana had wandered over to the sets. Suddenly, there was a deafening crash. To Elana’s horror, she had spilled a paint bucket onto a drying masterpiece! Everyone’s attention suddenly turned to Elana. She turned red. What are they going to do to me? Elana thought to herself. Just then, an angry gingerbread confronted her. “What did you do to my masterpiece?” he shrieked. Elana looked at Henry helplessly. She wished Henry would help her. She was confused What happened to Henry? What was going to happen? Will I ever get back into the cozy hotel room? What am I going to say? Elana thought frantically. Then she thought about the Palace of Honey. She thought about how everybody there knew Henry. Even a gingerbread here had cried, “Henry’s sick!” Suddenly, a plan formed in her mind. “I’m friends with Henry,” she shouted. “You’re friends with—?” the gingerbread man started. “Henry,” Elana finished. Everyone just stared. “I really am!” Elana continued. “What’s your name?” A gingerbread woman asked. “Elana,” Elana said. Everyone gaped at her. “Uh-” Elana paused. “What’s the big deal?” “Well, the Chosen One is Elana,” said a slim gingerbread man with a fake smile, “but I had no idea she was such a cute little chubby-cheeker.” “Well, that’s me,” Elana admitted, ignoring the gingerbread man’s name-calling. What is he talking about? Elana thought to herself. I don’t even have chubby cheeks! “So you’re the one that Henry was talking about!” said the angry gingerbread with the wrecked masterpiece, who suddenly seemed more friendly. “So, what’s your name?” Elana asked the gingerbread, changing the subject. “Gummy, but call me Gummer—I like that better.” “Bubblegum. Bubbles for short,” a gingerbread woman said. “Licore,” another gingerbread man introduced himself. “Choco,” (pronouncing it Choe-coe) the slim gingerbread said, then chuckled and added, “you cute little chubby itsy-poo!” Elana tried not to glare at Choco, because she felt awfully annoyed. She quickly felt better when Bubbles gave her an I-know-how-you-feel face and understanding nod. “Is that all?” Elana asked. “Yes, Coochi-poo,” answered Choco. Elana was burning with annoyance. She was sick and tired of being called names and so confused by what was happening to Henry. She felt like shouting out to Choco how horrible she thought he was—you skinny, fake-smiling, name-calling cookie!—but she knew it wasn’t right. Her mind was bursting with words that she could use to describe Choco. Instead, she took a deep breath and inquired, “Henry’s sick, right?” “I don’t know, Itsy-pie,” Choco replied, handing her a book. “This book is about paint-fainting. Read page 57 and tell us if anything is helpful.” VII: Curing Henry Elana took the book from Choco’s hands. Then she flipped to page 57. After that, she began to read to herself. CAUSE OF PAINT-FAINTING SICKNESS The paint-fainting sickness is caused by a chemical in heavy frosting paints; it is called Europitha (EErope-ee-tha). Europitha can cause fairies to become entranced and then faint after smelling the paint at least five times. The Europitha is deadly for all fairies. A chemical in fairies’ stomachs called Nishto (NISHE-too), interferes with the Europitha and makes a deadly gas. Scientists are trying to figure out why the gas makes the fairies faint, but the mystery still hasn’t been solved yet. Elana looked up from the book. “Done,” she said as she rubbed her finger on a page. “Find anything useful?” Choco inquired. “Fairies have Nisht-” Elana started. “Yeah, yeah,” Choco interrupted. “That’s what I thought. Read page 58 and tell me something important.” Elana wondered why he had said “tell me something important,” not “tell us something important,” but she obeyed Choco’s orders. HOW TO CURE THE PAINTFAINTING SICKNESS Curing the paint-fainting sickness is a very hard job. There are 53 steps in all! This is the easy way to use in case of emergency. Cover your patient with a handkerchief. Touch his or her throat lightly and then check pulse. Rub his or her stomach gently and pat his or her head. Pat his or her right thigh gently, then the left. WARNING: Don’t cradle your patient during the operation. If needed, put your patient on a table to help them balance. “Done,” Elana whispered, because Licore had fallen asleep due to boredom.
